Poker is universally popular across the United States, but there are many variations of the game and everyone has a favorite. If you’re a beginner in the world of poker, here’s a rough guide to the most popular rule variations.

What remains constant across all poker games is the hierarchy of hands. The Royal Flush is at the top with the five highest cards of the same suit, like the ace, king, queen, jack and ten or hearts. Next is the Straight Flush with five cards of the same suit in sequence, for instance nine, eight, seven, six and five of spades.

Four of a Kind comes next, for example four queens. Then is the Full House that is three matching cards and two other matching cards, say three tens and two fives. Flush is next with any five cards of the same suit, followed by Straight that has five cards of any suit in sequence, like ten, nine, eight, seven and six. Then comes Three of a Kind, for instance three fours. Next is Two Pair that is two sets of two matching cards, for example two threes and two sixes. Following that are the Pair (two matching cards) and High Card (the highest card in the absence of any combinations).

Hold’em

This is a community card game, which means there are common cards all players can use in addition to those dealt. The two players seated to the left of the dealer put money into the pot before the deal. In Texas Hold’em players are dealt two cards each (hole cards). Then three community cards are dealt face-up (Flop), followed by one (Turn) and another (River). There are four rounds of betting – after the hole cards are dealt, after the Flop, following the Turn and after the River. The objective is to make the best possible five-card hand with the hole and community cards. Omaha Hold’em is similar, the only difference being that each player is dealt four hole cards. But the final hand can only use two of the hole cards.

Stud

This too has a combination of face-down and face-up cards, but they are for individual players. In seven-card stud the game ends with players having three cards face-down and four face-up. In the five-card variation it ends with one card face-down and four face-up. There are several Stud variations, some having wild cards, the high/low that involves splitting the pot between players with the best and worst hands, and lowball where the lowest hand wins.

Draw

Cards are dealt face-down to all players, each getting five in the most common version. Players then have the option of drawing a card from the deck and discarding one instead. This generally happens for two betting rounds, which is followed by a showdown.
